West Philly apartment with easy commute to Swarthmore, $700/month

I’m a 2016 alum looking for a roommate for late July/August 1 move-in! This is for one room in a two-bedroom apartment in West Philly, near Malcolm X Park. The apartment is a 15-minute walk away from 49th Street Station, for easy access to Swarthmore’s campus.

Rent is $700/month and utilities usually come out to somewhere between $40-80 a month, depending on the season. You’d be taking over the lease (through May 2021) from my current roommate and would have the option to keep some/all of their furniture.

The apartment is on the second floor and has central air and heating, a washer/dryer and a dishwasher. There’s unpermitted parking on the block and bike storage on the first floor. The three apartments in our building share the porch.

The room faces the street and has a lovely classic West Philly bay window (great light for plants). The room is about 13 x 14 feet with some variation, and the walk-in closet is 7 feet deep and about 5 feet wide, with lots of room for stacking things on the upper shelves.

I’m a current English PhD student, open to living with a faculty or staff member, alum, or current student. I have a cat but would be open to adding an additional cat to the household.

Please contact me with any questions or to see photos of the apartment!

House Sitter

In connection with a book I am writing about pacifists who opposed U.S. involvement in World War II, I need to spend some time using the Swarthmore Peace Collection. Unfortunately my book advance is tiny. So I am hoping to find a housesitting situation for a week or two.

I’m flexible as to when this occurs, but summer seems ideal. Main requirement is wifi and reasonable proximity to 500 College Ave. Ideally I won’t need a car, although I can bring one if necessary.

I’m a quiet and excruciatingly responsible author and journalist based primarily in the Hudson Valley, where I teach occasionally at Bard College and in its prison program. I’m good with cats and plants, and I’ve been a homeowner for 30 years. I’ll gladly provide suitable references. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks.
